DC power for edge and small data centres
Compute is moving toward the edge, and it is multiplying small DC nodes rather than building more large ones.
The pattern we see
An edge facility is not a small hyperscale site. The power design has to fit a room that was not built for it, the load grows in steps rather than smoothly, and the vendor templates you are shown were written for a scale you are not operating at. Meanwhile the market is full of language about AI backup that does not survive contact with an actual specification.
What this actually requires
- DC power sized to the load actually in front of you, with a documented path to the next step.
- Battery backup matched to the real autonomy requirement, not to a number copied from a larger design.
- A supplier who says plainly which products fit and which do not.
- Compatibility established before purchase, in writing.
How we approach it
One honest note on this segment, because it is where the marketing is loudest. A rack backup unit for AI servers is not a rack storage battery with a different label: it delivers on the order of 3 kW for about 4 minutes in a deliberately narrow voltage window, using a different cell type and a different thermal and power-electronics design from a LiFePO4 rack battery built for 0.2–0.5C. We do not sell it, and if that is what you need we will point you to a specialist manufacturer rather than take the order. What we do serve well is the small DC node of a few kilowatts — where the growth in edge compute actually lands.
